Players who can't get enough pure tactical action from either Origins or Awakening, may enjoy exploring this adventure's interesting premise. However, “The Darkspawn Chronicles” lacks a number of things that makes gameplay elsewhere in Dragon Age as appealing as it is. It also fails to add a number of the things to the main game that players hope for from expansion content, like new abilities, classes, art assets for the toolkit, or just more adventure for their player character's to experience during the core campaign. As it is, the sparse experience, short length, and little replay value leave “The Darkspawn Chronicles” as something of a novelty.

For five bucks, you can purchase an hour of storming through exits and killing innocent townsfolk; If you’re like me and found Zevran to be an incredible annoyance, you may enjoy punching him repeatedly as a gargantuan Ogre. If you want to butcher Clerics and women, be my guest. Although this sounds insanely fun, “The Darkspawn Chronicles” manages to perfect “boring.” Essentially, it’s the same game with different character models and nothing to offer the Dragon Age crowd minus a few, humorous codex entries. Your reward is 25 achievement points and a lackluster ending. Unless you’d like a bloody-up a few teammates—save another five bucks for a legit rental at your local Blockbuster.

If you go into the $5 or 400 Microsoft Point piece of this DLC with the understanding that it is a just a small game add on and not a whole new mini-campaign you should not be disappointed. Sure, this piece of DLC could have been fleshed out with more story, perhaps even with more characterization, but that is not what it is. If you take it for what it is, a brief vision of an alternate outcome of victory by the bad guys, then it become a satisfying romp of death and destruction.

In retrospect, first starting out on this DLC, was a bit rough. I usually run into a game headfirst and doing so in this game cost me about an hour. It had a small highlight when you get to kill innocents and you get to see the end game from a different point of view, but other than that, a bit of a letdown. Fans of Dragon Age: Origins might want to pick this DLC up when its on sale or just not at all.

Being able to play as the bad guy is always a neat idea, especially when you get to massacre major characters you may have spent over 100 hours questing with in Dragon Age: Origins. While a few of the Darkspawn, the Ogre and Shriek, are fun to play around with, the short length, lack of customization options, and absence of any real character interaction make this bit of content too straightforward to be especially memorable. The novelty of the concept and small asking price make it an attractive option, but like a limited-run fast food sandwich, it doesn't satisfy like it should.

All in all this was a pretty decent piece of downloadable content. Problems aside, I found it enjoyable and wish it lasted longer than what it did. I honestly wouldn’t mind if they added DLC like this to Awakening where your PC ends up being one of the intelligent darkspawn, just to see what that would be like. I rate this a 7.5/10 for its enjoyability even with the areas I nitpicked.

In the end, Darkspawn Chronicles is a cheap piece of DLC with a number of issues, but if you enjoy Dragon Age’s combat system (or the prospect of two more achievements), you might some enjoyment out of it, especially if you read the codex entries that explain what happened while the Wardens were under Alistair’s employ.

The Darkspawn Chronicles is only worth buying if you’re after the special Darkspawn weapon that can be unlocked after finishing it. Fans who have exhausted the game already should just stay away from this and save their $5 for something else. The weapon is indeed useful for anyone who is still playing Origins or the Awakening story mode but other than that, there’s no point to get this DLC.

So, another Dragon Age episode, another hour that just offers the bare minimum of gaming, another shrug of disappointment. Of course, there's a very boring practical reason for this: new stories need writers, voice actors and animators, all of which cost time and money. A quick loot grind through an existing map? That's a far more economical prospect.

In the end, its up to the Dragon Age player whether or not to get this DLC or not but this Examiner recommends it because of the last scene of the DLC and finally kicking the hell out of the companions.
